Super Technology for Ultra-High-Speed Elevator 20.5 m/s
The ultra-high-speed elevator runs up only in 53 seconds from the second basement floor to the 119th floor in Shanghai Tower. The high-speed elevator, 20.5 m/s, is a fruit of Mitsubishi Electric's advanced technologies which broke through various obstacles not only to materialize such high-speed and high-rise but also to provide safety and comfort.

Benefits:

Super High Speed
A powerful permanent magnet motor and two large-capacity control panels enabled elevators to run at a speed of 20.5 m/sec, 13 times faster than average elevators (1.5 m/sec) installed in residential buildings.

Making the ride even more comfortable
In high-speed elevators, passengers often feel discomfort in their ears. This is caused by the rapid change in air pressure associated with altitude. Mitsubishi Electric developed a system to regulate air pressure. Advanced acceleration and deceleration control mitigate passengers' discomfort - heavy during ascent and weightless during descent.

A smooth ride
Horizontal motion of an elevator car is caused by even the slightest deformation or inaccuracy of the guide rails. Our Active Roller Guide system employs sensors that detect any movement and counter it instantly by damping the sway in the opposite direction. The result is so smooth that a coin standing on its edge keeps the balance.

Measures against long-period oscillation
Elevator ropes can oscillate wildly when a building sways from side to side, caused by an earthquake or high winds. When the sensor detects such building movement, the car stops at the nearest floor and parks with the doors open to facilitate the safe evacuation of passengers. In the meantime, rope sway amplitude is detected automatically, and, if necessary, the car automatically goes to a floor where rope sway is reduced.

New stronger, less-stretchable wire rope
The higher a building is, the longer and heavier the elevator ropes become. It has always been a challenge to develop a rope that can withstand not only the car/counterweight load but also its own weight for a building taller than 600 meters. To enhance rope strength, we increased its thickness and density and developed an original rope structure featuring 1.5 times the strength per weight of conventional ropes.

Emergency stop achieved by double safety gear
To increase emergency braking ability, tandem high-performance safety gear is incorporated for super-high-speed elevators. The fine ceramics used for the shoes can withstand friction heat as high as 1,000 degrees Celsius.
